From the cost of buying presents to the price of heating your home, Christmas is a famously expensive time of year.
Whether you’re catering for a large group or for yourself, stocking up on food for the festive period can be very costly.
However, supermarkets across the country have sliced the cost of some Christmas essentials just in time for the big day – here’s how you can benefit.
Trusty yellow stickers often represent incredible value, offering heavily reduced prices on stock soon to be past its best-before date.
With savings of up to 90 percent off, it can be worthwhile scouring supermarket shelves in search of discounted food – especially at Christmas
The optimum time to hunt for yellow-stickered food is usually first thing in the morning, or just before the store closes. It does, however, vary from store to store. Generally, Aldi and Lidl are most likely to have their reduced food at store opening time (usually 8am, but check your local stores holiday hours).
Whilst other supermarkets, such as Tesco, Morrisons, Asda, Sainsbury’s, and M&S all opt to display their yellow sticker priced food in the evening, after 6pm, with Marks and Spencers generally rolling out their offers 30 minutes before closing time.
Tesco’s Clubcard scheme is a must-have for savvy shoppers all year round, but their loyalty programme really comes into its own at Christmas time.
It is simple and free to sign up to Tesco Clubcard, and if you’re running low on ingredients to keep you going from now until the new year, Tesco has a variety of festive vegetables on offer for as little as 15p each.
Included in the offer for Clubcard members are Tesco Broccoli 375G (originally 78p), Tesco Brussels Sprouts 500g (originally 95p), and Tesco Carrots 800G (originally 45p) – the incredible exclusive price reductions are available in store and online until December 25, Christmas Day.
Also available at Tesco for 15p each are 2kg of All Rounder Potatoes (originally 99p), Tesco Swede (originally 69p), Tesco Red Cabbage (originally 80p) and Tesco Parsnips 500G (originally 65p).
Fellow supermarket Sainsbury’s also have their own incredible veg offers exclusive to their own loyalty club members, Nectar Card holders.
It’s free to sign up for a Nectar Card online, and in doing so you could make some big savings on festive food.
For just 19p each you can get your hands on 1kg of Sainsbury’s carrots (originally 60p), Sainsbury’s Brussels Sprouts 500g (originally £1), Sainsbury’s Parsnips 500g (originally 60p), and Sainsbury’s British Swede (originally 62p).
Similarly to Tesco, these offers are available online and in store while stocks last until December 25.
Also available for a Nectar Price of 19p each are Sainsbury’s red and white cabbages (originally 80p each), while 2kg of Sainsbury’s British King Edward Potatoes will cost you £1 with a Nectar Card, as opposed to £1.50 without.
Following suit, budget supermarket Lidl have selected a number of festive vegetables as their Pick of the Week until December 24.
Included, all for the price of 15p each, are British Brussels sprouts 500g (originally 95), British swede (originally 62p), British parsnips 500g (originally 65p), British carrots 500g (originally 80p), British white potatoes 2kg (originally 7.5p/kg), and Echalion shallots 300g (originally 99p).
You don’t have to be a member of a loyalty scheme to receive discounted prices, but they are available in store only whilst stocks last.
