A 38-year-old man died during an altercation with another man at a vacation rental in Point Loma early Monday, and police are investigating the death as suspicious, San Diego police said.
Police received a 911 call about 2:10 a.m. reporting that a man was in medical distress following a fight at a home on Poinsettia Drive near Amaryllis Drive, according to homicide Lt. Jud Campbell.
Officers found the victim, who was not breathing. He died at a hospital.
“During the night, there was a physical altercation where the male who died was physically restrained by another member of the group,” Campbell said. The man went into medical distress while being restrained, he said.
“Detectives are currently investigating what led up to the altercation, the nature of the altercation and restraint, and the circumstances surrounding the death,” Campbell added.
The Medical Examiner’s Office will determine the cause of death.
The other person suspected of being involved in the altercation, a 44-year-old man, was detained, police said. Neither his name, nor the name of the person who died, was released. Police said the home was being rented by a group of people from out of town.
