As we age, time naturally changes which styles suit us best. But being over 40 doesn’t mean we need to look anything less than fabulous.
Mature hair can grow more slowly and start to feel thinner, while hormonal changes can make our crowning glory feel dry and fried. Subtle tweaks in length, layering, and colour can help disguise greys and enhance facial features for a more refreshed appearance. Luckily for us, experts have shared three fantastic hairstyles that can add a more youthful touch.
Side-parted pixie cut
Although some may hesitate to go short, a pixie cut is an excellent choice for mature women.
This bold style highlights the face and cheekbones, creating a youthful appearance, according to Jean Will, hair expert and co-founder of NiaWigs Inc.
It’s also a great option for those with thinning hair, as strategically placed layers can add coverage and volume.
For a light and airy finish, the side-parted pixie is “the perfect cut,” offering effortless style and movement.
Jean claims this particular cut has the power to “make women over 40 look as if they are in their 20s.”
Layered Wavy Bob with Wispy Bangs
For those with wavy or curly hair, or for anyone seeking a low-maintenance style, a shoulder-length bob with soft bangs is a great choice.
The layered cut enhances volume and movement while naturally framing the face.
Jean Will recommends opting for a “bouncy, chin-length bob with layers around the face” to create a youthful, lifted look.
Adding wispy bangs not only conceals thinning hair but also helps soften the forehead, subtly disguising wrinkles and signs of ageing.
This versatile fringe can be styled in the middle or swept to the side to best complement your face shape.
Asymmetrical bob
As women age, hair can become brittle and thin. One way to add instant volume is by cutting it asymmetrically. It’s also a great choice for those wanting to keep some length.
Gina Rivera, hairstylist and founder of Phenix Salon Suites said: “A textured asymmetrical bob creates a youthful appeal.”
This haircut “is another terrific choice for fine hair,” the stylist told She Finds.
Hair colour also changes with age, and finding grey hair is the first physical sign of ageing hair people notice. Grey hairs are caused by the slowing of melanin production in the hair follicle.
As the follicle loses the ability to produce melanin with age, hairs become more transparent – and they appear as grey or white.
