An hours-long cleanup of a hazmat spill on northbound Interstate 805 caused a major backup on the freeway Monday.
A crash reported late Sunday resulted in the spill of some type of material onto the freeway, officials said.
Three lanes of the freeway were reported blocked south of state Route 52 shortly after 11:30 p.m., Caltrans San Diego reported on social media.
As of 8 a.m., only the fast lane just north of Clairemont Mesa Boulevard remained open, a California Highway Patrol dispatcher said.
It is not clear what material was spilled. Hazmat crews were working on cleaning up the material, according to a CHP online log.
Caltrans maps showed very slow speeds on I-805 starting south of Interstate 8 all the way north to the incident location.
