Last year fans rejoiced when Henry Cavill made a surprise return as Superman in the Black Adam end-credits scene.
The Man of Steel star took to social media to share his excitement and prospect for future projects, yet it wasn’t long before such hopes and dreams all fell apart.
Warner Bros had hired Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy director James Gunn to become the new DC Studios boss, wiping the slate clean and rebooting the comic book franchise.
Cavill was out and the filmmaker announced he’d be writing and directing the first movie of DC Universe Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters.
Superman: Legacy is set to hit cinemas on July 11, 2025 with a younger Clark Kent entering an Earth already full of superheroes.
Yesterday, The Hollywood Reporter shared that Gunn has screen-tested three actors for Superman and three actresses for Lois Lane.
The Man of Steel contenders are Nicholas Hoult, Tom Brittney and David Corenswet, and those up for his Daily Planet love interest are Rachel Brosnahan, Phoebe Dynevor and Emma Mackey.
Warner Bros is yet to announce the final casting, which is expected to come as early as this week. Nevertheless, multiple trusted scoopers are claiming that the Superman: Legacy leads have already been decided.
CanWeGetSomeToast tweeted: “Corenswet and Mackey are all but locked in. Poor Nicholas Hoult though. I‘ve been rooting for him since he tested for The Batman. Mark my words, he will be a superhero again one day. He absolutely deserves it.”
Meanwhile, Itsryanunicomb wrote on Instagram: “I’ve heard this enough times the last few days from enough people to have enough confidence to post this. It seems that James Gunn may have indeed found the new cinematic SUPERMAN in David Corenswet. An extremely popular fan-cast for many years & a wonderful actor in his own right. I would expect proper confirmation any day now. How exciting!”
MyTimeToShineHello, corroborated with them and added that Bill Skargård, who was up rumoured to be up against his brother Alexander Skarsgård and Hoult, has been cast as the villain Lex Luthor. Nothing is yet official, but this trio could well be what Gunn announces in the next few days.
Superman: Legacy hits UK cinemas on July 11, 2025.
