If you could be mayor for a day, what would you do to make San Diego a better place to live?
If you are in kindergarten through 12th grade, the city is listening.
Applications are now being accepted for this year’s Mayor for a Day contest. School-aged kids are encouraged to submit a brief essay — no longer than 500 words — or a short video of no more than three minutes to explain how they would improve the quality of life in the city.
Free fish tacos for everyone? Bouncy houses in every park? That’d be cool, but think big!
What are the issues facing San Diegans that could benefit from a kid’s — not a politician’s — perspective?
The winner will get to shadow Mayor Todd Gloria and other city departments for a day and also attend the State of the City address in January.
The contest is one way to foster leadership in San Diego’s youth, according to the Mayor’s Office.
Just ask Gloria. As a 10-year-old kid interested in politics growing up in Clairemont, he was runner-up in a mayor for a day contest. He was sworn in as the city’s 37th mayor decades later.
The deadline to submit applications online is before midnight Dec. 15. Apply at sandiego.seamlessdocs.com/f/mayorforaday2024.
