Authorities on Friday released the name of a jogger killed in a hit-and-run crash in Point Loma earlier this week.
The Medical Examiner’s Office identified him as Michael Casey Ellis, 30, who lived in the Point Loma area. San Diego police initially said the victim was 20 years old.
According to police, Ellis was running east on West Point Loma Boulevard and began to cross Nimitz Boulevard against a red light when he was struck by a driver in a black BMW sedan around 5 a.m. Thursday.
A witness told police it appeared the BMW was racing with a white Ford Mustang, police said. A third vehicle, a red Dodge Charger, also was seen driving at a high rate of speed.
Ellis died at the scene. None of the drivers stopped.
Less than two hours after the crash, the BMW believed to have been involved in the crash was found abandoned at Canon Street and Rosecrans Street.
