Lifeguards with the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department towed in a suspected smuggling boat carrying six people off the Sunset Cliffs area early Friday.
After getting a call for assistance about 7:15 a.m., lifeguards found the boat approaching the surfline. They sent several people to help and towed the boat to the agency’s headquarters dock, Fire-Rescue spokesperson Mónica Muñoz said.
No one was hurt or needed medical attention, she said. Lifeguards provided the six people with blankets and waited for federal law enforcement officers to arrive.
She said lifeguards believed the boat was a smuggling vessel, so they reached out to local and federal law enforcement. Customs and Border Protection officers took the group of people, and the U.S. Coast Guard took the boat.
No further information was immediately available.
