A 35-year-old man was fatally shot while attending a memorial event in La Mesa on Tuesday night, and the unidentified shooter got away, police said.
The shooting happened as the celebration of life event was wrapping up, just after 8:30 p.m. on Echo Drive on the property of Word of Life church, La Mesa police Lt. Katy Lynch said. The area is just west of state Route 125 near the state Route 94 interchange. The gunfire sent people scrambling to flee, she said.
Officers arrived to find the victim had been shot in the head. They administered life-saving measures until paramedics arrived and took over. He was taken to a hospital, where he died.
Lynch said the homicide victim is a San Diego resident, but his name was withheld until his family could be notified of his death.
Investigators are still working to get a description of the shooter and figure out how he or she left the scene, she said.
La Mesa police are asking anyone who was in the area at the time of the shooting or who may have information on the incident to call the department at 619-667-1400.
