A 20-year-old man accused of stabbing an elderly woman in the neck last year was arrested Wednesday following an hours-long standoff with SWAT in National City, according to police.
Police were called to the scene on North T Avenue near Division Street on March 20 after receiving reports that an 83-year-old woman had been stabbed.
When officers arrived, they learned the woman had been stabbed in the neck during an unprovoked attack while she was out for a morning walk, Lt. Antonio Ybarra said.
The woman was taken to the hospital and survived her injury, Ybarra said. A knife was recovered near the scene.
Nearly nine months later, detectives identified DNA evidence on the knife belonged to a National City man, police said.
On Wednesday, police located and attempted to contact the suspect around 2:20 p.m. at a duplex rented out by his mother on East 7th Street near Highland Avenue, Ybarra said. He refused to comply with the officers’ orders and barricaded himself inside the duplex.
Negotiators were called in for a six-hour-long standoff between police and the man. After the suspect was told SWAT had received a search warrant around 8:30 p.m., the man exited the duplex and surrendered, Ybarra said.
He was booked into San Diego Central Jail on suspicion of attempted murder.
