A 33-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of charges including vehicular manslaughter and hit and run in a crash that killed a motorcycle passenger in the Tierrasanta neighborhood over the weekend, San Diego police said.
The man, identified as Luis Hernandez, was also booked into county jail on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs.
The crash was reported about 7:30 p.m. Saturday on West Hills Parkway near Carlton Oaks Drive, along the boundary with Santee.
Police said a Honda Accord driver was headed south when he merged from one lane to the next and rear-ended the three-wheeled Harley-Davidson motorcycle.
The Honda driver didn’t stop, although the Honda was found abandoned a short distance away, police said.
The driver of the bike, a 65-year-old man, suffered a broken leg and abrasions. His passenger, a 68-year-old woman, suffered a brain bleed, broken legs and a lacerated spleen. Both were taken to a hospital, where the woman died, police said. Her name was not released.
About two and a half hours after the crash, while police investigated, an officer saw the suspect, later identified as Hernandez, walk by and arrested him.
Hernandez’s arraignment was scheduled for Wednesday.
