A man is dead after stabbing his mother-in-law in a Chula Vista home, then apparently intentionally crashing his car in Mission Valley with police in pursuit, Chula Vista police said Thursday.
The 41-year-old stabbing suspect is also believed to have cut his wife during the knife attack, which happened at roughly 8 p.m. Wednesday in a Yanonali Avenue home, Sgt. Anthony Molina said in a news release. The area is a residential neighborhood southeast of Olympic Parkway and Heritage Road.
Police headed to the home after someone called 911 to report a stabbing. As officers arrived, they spotted a vehicle fleeing from the home. They tried to stop it, but the driver sped off. The officers gave chase.
Other officers went inside the home, where they found a 69-year-old woman who had been stabbed multiple times. Her 42-year-old daughter was also injured, with cuts to her arms. Both were taken to a hospital, where they older woman died.
As police and paramedics tended to the two women, the fleeing driver led officers on a chase for about 25 minutes.
At some point, the driver headed north on Interstate 805. As he reached the Interstate 8 interchange in Mission Valley, his vehicle slammed into a freeway divider.
Officers who saw the crash said it appeared to have been intentional, according to Molina.
The driver was seriously injured and died at a hospital.
Police did not release the names of the victims or the suspect, pending notification of family.
The couple lived at the home where the incident happened, Molina said. Detectives are still investigating what led to the attack.
