A 37-year-old man was hit by a car and killed Sunday night after a crash moments earlier on Interstate 5 in downtown San Diego, a California Highway Patrol officer said Tuesday.
The first crash occurred about 8:30 p.m. when a Nissan Versa crashed into a Nissan Altima that was blocking the middle lanes of north I-5, south of state Route 163, CHP Officer Salvador Castro said.
The impact left the Nissan Versa disabled in the left two lanes, facing east, with no lights activated, Castro said. The driver and three passengers got out. They were standing in the lanes when a BMW 428i sedan crashed into two of them and the car, the officer said.
The two victims suffered major injuries and were taken to a hospital, where one of them died. The man was identified as a Mexican citizen, but his name was not released, pending family notifications.
No further information about the second victim — such as the person’s age, gender or condition — was available.
The north I-5 lanes were closed for about two and a half hours, Castro said.
He said neither alcohol nor drugs was a suspected factor in the crash.
Anyone with information about the crash was asked to call the CHP at (858) 293-6000.
