A person who federal officials described as an “armed individual” was killed in an encounter with U.S. Border Patrol agents, officials said Monday.
The incident occurred around 7 a.m. Sunday in a remote location east of the Otay Mesa Port of Entry, according to a spokesperson with U.S. Customs and Border Protection.
Members of the Border Patrol’s Special Operations Detachment were conducting an operation when the “use of force incident” took place, CBP said.
The agency didn’t provide details about the incident, including what kind of force was used and the circumstances of the encounter or operation, but said “an armed individual” was declared deceased at the scene.
The FBI, CBP’s Office of Professional Responsibility, the Department of Homeland Security’s Office of the Inspector General and the Sheriff’s Department responded to the scene to investigate.
The Sheriff’s Department, the lead investigating agency, said Monday it would not be releasing any further information. CBP said in a statement that “additional information will be shared as it becomes available.”
