The 43-year-old man killed in an East Village shooting over the weekend was identified as a San Diego resident, police said.
Ali Jabbar was walking with a group on 16th Street near Market Street about 3:05 p.m. Sunday when an unknown suspect approached him and opened fire, San Diego police Lt. Jud Campbell said.
Someone reported the shooting, and a witness flagged down a nearby officer, Campbell said. Police found Jabbar on the sidewalk in front of an apartment building, suffering from multiple gunshots. He was taken to a hospital where he died.
Investigators believe the killing was a targeted attack.
“It does appear the suspect intentionally targeted the victim and not the people around him,” Campbell said.
The shooter, a man in dark clothing, was last seen running to a nearby silver or gray sedan and driving toward state Route 94.
Anyone with information about the shooting was asked to call the homicide unit at (619) 531-2293 or Crime Stoppers anonymously at (888) 580-8477.
