A 37-year-old man wanted on suspicion of killing a 41-year-old homeless man in El Cajon was arrested Friday at the border while trying to cross back into San Diego from Tijuana, according to police.
John Paul Campbell was arrested around 2 p.m. at the San Ysidro Port of Entry in connection with the April 9 death of Robert Mansi, El Cajon police Lt. Will Guerin said in a news release.
Police found Mansi dead from blunt force trauma on West Main Street near Magnolia Avenue around 3 a.m., Guerin said.
First responders rendered first aid and performed CPR on Mansi, but he died before he could be taken to a hospital.
Detectives identified Campbell, also described by police as homeless, as a suspect in the killing, Guerin said. Campbell had been arrested Feb.15 on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon and released from jail on April 8 — roughly seven hours before Mansi died, police said.
Customs and Border Protection officers detained Campbell as he tried to cross back into the U.S. He was booked into San Diego Central Jail on suspicion of murder.
No other details were immediately available.
