A man who died after a fight in a Point Loma vacation rental earlier this week was identified by San Diego police as a Chicago resident.
Mark Giancarlo, 38, died soon after police received a report around 2:10 a.m. Monday of a person in medical distress at a home on Poinsettia Drive near Amaryllis Drive, Lt. Jud Campbell said in a news release on Wednesday.
Paramedics found Giancarlo inside the home and not breathing, Campbell said. He was taken to a hospital, where he died.
Investigators later learned that Giancarlo was with a group of people staying at the vacation rental. A fight broke out where he had to be physically restrained by another member of the group, the early investigation found.
Giancarlo went into medical distress while being restrained, and the group called 911, Campbell said.
Detectives temporarily detained a 44-year-old man involved in the fight but released him soon after pending further investigation.
The county Medical Examiner’s Office will determine the cause of death.
