A 39-year-old man was hit by a car and killed on Monday night in Chula Vista after he exited his stalled car and was standing in freeway lanes, authorities said.
The collision occurred shortly after 10:35 p.m. on southbound Interstate 5 north of Palomar Street.
The driver got out of the Honda Civic after the car stopped running, California Highway Patrol Officer Sal Castro said. The car was hit by several vehicles, and the man was also struck, he said. The sequence of events was still under investigation.
The man suffered major injuries and died before he could be taken to a hospital, Castro said.
The man’s family identified him as Benson Hinga in an online obituary. He was a San Diego resident, according to the county Medical Examiner’s Office.
Drivers in the cars involved stopped and cooperated with investigators. Three lanes of the freeway were shut down for about four hours as officers worked the crash site.
