An investigation is underway after a man’s body washed ashore and was recovered by lifeguards near the Ocean Beach Pier Wednesday afternoon, San Diego Fire-Rescue Department officials said.
The body was found a few hours after a surfer reported to lifeguards that he had seen the corpse in the water near the pier around 7:30 a.m., Lifeguard Lt. Rick Romero said.
A search was conducted over the following hours, Fire-Rescue Department spokesperson José Ysea said. Around 1:45 p.m., lifeguards and San Diego police officers discovered the body along the shoreline.
The body was secured and a perimeter was set up around the scene. The county Medical Examiner’s Office will determine the cause of death and provide the identification of the man.
The man’s body was found in a location close to where a kayaker had been reported missing out of Mission Bay on Friday.
The search effort began after an outrigger kayak that was broken in half was found west of the Mission Bay entrance channel. San Diego lifeguards, San Diego Fire-Rescue personnel and Coast Guard crew looked for more than 52 hours and covered a nearly 460-square-mile area before being called off Sunday evening.
