San Diego mayoral challenger Geneviéve Jones-Wright has landed a notable endorsement from county Supervisor Monica Montgomery Steppe, but incumbent Todd Gloria is still dominating endorsements in the race.
Gloria has been endorsed by two other county supervisors, five local members of Congress, seven of eight current San Diego City Council members, the county Democratic party and several large labor unions.
After Montgomery Steppe, Jones-Wright’s most prominent endorsements are from La Mesa Councilmember Patricia Dillard, La Prensa San Diego, the Earl B. Gilliam Bar Association and Alliance of Californians for Community Empowerment.
Larry Turner, another candidate in the race, does not have any endorsements listed on his campaign website but said Monday he has been endorsed by Bill Walton, the former NBA player who has become a high-profile critic of city homelessness.
Daniel Smiechowski said by email that he’s been endorsed by Charles Abdelnour, who was San Diego’s longest-serving city clerk, serving from 1977 to 2005.
Jane Glasson, the only Republican in the race, has not listed any endorsements on her social media pages. She has no campaign website.
Montgomery Steppe, who was on the San Diego City Council for five years before getting elected supervisor in November, said she supports Jones-Wright because of her priorities and commitment to social justice.
“San Diego deserves a leader who prioritizes the people over power, and Geneviéve brings the vision, dedication and leadership needed to move San Diego forward,” Montgomery Steppe said in a Saturday news release. “Her experience advocating for justice and her commitment to community empowerment embodies the values our city needs in its mayor.”
Jones-Wright, a civil rights attorney, said she was honored by the endorsement, partly because she and Montgomery Steppe share many goals.
“Having her endorsement and formal support further demonstrates our shared vision for a San Diego that works for every San Diegan,” she said.
In addition to the support listed above, Gloria has also been endorsed by Gov. Gavin Newsom and eight state lawmakers, as well as two other county supervisors — Nora Vargas and Terra Lawson-Remer.
