A 21-year-old man who was reported missing last month was found dead Tuesday in a car submerged in the San Luis Rey River in Bonsall, sheriff’s officials said.
A team of divers and search-and-rescue volunteers discovered the body of Isaiah Lowe after a day-long recovery effort, sheriff’s Lt. Darrell McNeal said.
Lowe was last seen Jan. 22 when surveillance video showed him driving off in his Chevrolet Camaro, McNeal said. His family reported him missing two days later to the Fallbrook sheriff’s station.
His name was put into the missing person database, and a bulletin with his description was distributed to law enforcement agencies around Southern California, investigators said.
On Monday, Lowe’s mother reached out to investigators to tell them she had a hit on a GPS tracking device in his car, McNeal said.
Investigators said they headed out to the location and found a fence damaged in the area where the GPS stopped tracking the Camaro just north of Ramona Drive and south of state Route 76. Debris from the car was also found on the shoulder of the road.
The car was found submerged in the river at the base of the road, but nightfall forced the recovery to be called off until the next day, officials said.
The team pulled the Camaro out Tuesday. The body inside matched Lowe’s description, McNeal said.
The county Medical Examiner’s Office will determine the cause of death.
Investigators asked anyone with information to call the Sheriff’s Office at (858) 868-3200.
