When the San Diego Museum Council’s annual Museum Month celebration takes place in February, it will return with with several new participants and plans to expand to Baja California.
More than 70 museums and cultural institutions will participate in the 35th annual Museum Month from Feb. 1 to Feb. 29. The event offers half-off admission to visitors at participating locations.
New Museum Month locations for 2024 include LEGOLAND California Resort and its SEA LIFE Aquarium, the California Wolf Center and the Deer Park Winery & Auto Museum. Also new this year, Museum Month will be recognized as an official event of the World Design Capital San Diego Tijuana 2024. The design capital is a designation won together by the two cities for achievements in design that brings with it a yearlong showcase of civic and cultural events.
“We hope this collaboration is the first of many to come as we promote our region as a global arts and culture destination,” said a statement from Museum Council Executive Director Bob Lehman.
The locations in Baja California have not yet been announced. A full list of participating sites will be available on sandiegomuseumcouncil.org.
Patrons can collect a Museum Month pass from more than 80 local libraries across San Diego County. It can be used for half-off admission four times at any of the museum locations that are part of this program. They will be available starting Jan. 26.
Digital passes — which can be downloaded directly to a smartphone — will also be available on the San Diego Museum Council website starting Feb. 1. Some museums and institutions might require online reservations, additional fees for certain exhibits or activities or printed passes only. Check online or call for details.
Museum Month is offered through funding from First 5 San Diego, the California Arts Council, County of San Diego, The Pecus Group and the San Diego Commission for the Arts and Culture.
“One of the best ways for children to learn is through hands-on experiences and that is exactly what museums allow them to do,” said Alethea Arguilez, executive director of First 5 San Diego in a released statement. “Museum Month provides such a great opportunity for parents to engage their children in art, science, music, history and more. Most importantly, they get to do it together as a family, which is vital for the healthy development of children.”
