Octopus Energy is urging UK households with a smart meter to make a ‘no-brainer’ change to save up to £271 per year. The major energy supplier, which serves almost seven million households across the country, says customers who sign up to its free Octoplus rewards programme can benefit from hundreds of pounds of savings.
The rewards programme is for smart meter customers only and allows customers to collect ‘Octopoints’ that can then be converted into cash and redeemed against a wealth of offers. Among the perks and giveaways is a free hot drink at Greggs and Caffe Nero every two weeks, 25% off at selected restaurants, two for £10 Odeon cinema tickets and, most importantly, free electricity when the grid is greenest. Octopus says the programme can save customers up to £271 per year and for those who already have a smart meter, signing up is a “no-brainer”.
The supplier explains: “Octoplus is our free rewards programme that can save customers up to £271 a year. Sign up for tons of perks and giveaways like a weekly free hot drink at Greggs or Caffe Nero, 25% off dinners, and even, wait for it, Free Electricity when the grid’s green! If you’ve got a smart meter, it’s a no-brainer really.
“Octoplus is a super unique rewards scheme that takes advantage of the half hourly pricing of electricity which changes depending on whether the grid is under pressure (lots of people using energy at once) or when the grid is benefiting from lots of renewable energy meaning electricity is super cheap!
“To benefit from Octoplus we need customers to:
“The main way of benefiting from Octoplus right now is by taking part in Saving Sessions or through Free Electricity Sessions. For both, you’ll need a working electric smart meter so we can verify how much energy you’ve managed to save in half hourly time periods.”
Customers who are part of the rewards scheme will gain Octopoints which can then be converted into cash at a rate of 800 Octopoints for £1, or you can multiply the value of your Octopoints by redeeming them against offers that will be available soon. The points last for three years and are available to see in the Octoplus tab of your online account, or Octopus mobile app.
The supplier adds: “Rewards with Octoplus can change throughout the year. For example, you can earn Octopoints for saving energy with Saving Sessions in the colder months and access Free Electricity when the grid is super green. Keep a look out for limited-time surprise offers like free pints or tickets to Glastonbury, too.
“But considering rewards you can access the entire year, we estimate you could save £200+. That’s based on getting a free coffee at Greggs or Coffee Nero every other week – worth up to £104, claiming 2-for-one tickets at Odeon 4 times a year – worth up to £64, and dining out with 25% off at Mitchells & Butlers restaurants and pubs around 4 times a year – worth up to £40.
