A driver was thrown from his car and died Sunday evening after swerving across the northbound lanes of Interstate 15 in Rancho Bernardo and overturning on the right shoulder of the freeway, authorities reported.
The crash occurred around 5:20 p.m. near the exit to Pomerado Road and West Bernardo Drive, California Highway Patrol Officer Jake Sanchez said Monday.
Before crashing, the victim’s blue Honda sedan swerved from the left side of the freeway across all five lanes and then struck a hill off the right shoulder and overturned, according to Sanchez and a CHP incident log.
The driver, a man believed to be in his 30s, was thrown from the car and gravely injured, Sanchez said. Medics took him by ambulance to Palomar Medical Center, where doctors pronounced him dead.
According to the CHP incident log, CHP officers at the scene requested a San Diego police helicopter to help search for potential victims thrown from the car. It was unclear how exactly authorities located the victim.
The crash briefly shut down all northbound lanes on I-15, and the two right lanes remained closed for about 90 minutes.
