A 20-year-old man suspected of killing another man and injuring a teen in a shooting at a Chula Vista mobile home park Tuesday evening turned himself in to police the next day, police said Wednesday.
The shooting occurred about 5:30 p.m. in the Brentwood mobile home park on Industrial Boulevard at Naples Street, said Chula Vista police Sgt. Anthony Molina.
A 911 caller reported hearing the sound of gunshots at the park and then seeing a white Jeep SUV flee the area, Molina said.
Within minutes, a few blocks away, someone in a Jeep SUV flagged down a police officer. Two gunshot victims were found inside the vehicle, police said.
The victims were taken to a hospital, where the older victim died. The second victim, 17, was reported to be stable as of Wednesday morning, Molina said.
A tactical police team responded to the mobile home believed to be connected to the shooting, and detectives identified 20-year-old Kai Espinoza as a suspect. Officers surrounded the unit and calling for any occupants to come outside, but Espinoza was not inside, Molina said.
Even after the occupants were out, the tactical incident “took a lot of time,” Molina said.
“We did everything in a manner that is safe for everyone involved, or as safe as possible,” he said.
On Wednesday morning, investigators remained at the scene searching the home. The department worked with other law enforcement agencies to search for Espinoza, and about 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, the man turned himself in at the Chula Vista Police Department.
Police asked anyone with information about the incident to contact Crime Stoppers at (888) 580-8477 or sdcrimestoppers.org. Tipsters can remain anonymous.
