Chula Vista police are investigating an early-morning shooting at a luxury apartment complex in Otay Ranch that left one person dead and one injured Wednesday.
Officers responded to the Salerno Luxury Rentals apartment complex on Calle Verona at Santa Carolina Road just after 1:30 a.m. after a woman called to say her friend had been shot and was bleeding. When officers arrived, they found a man suffering from a gunshot wound to the head outside the apartment. He died before he could be taken to a hospital, according to Sgt. Anthony Molina.
A second victim — a 24-year-old man — was found inside the apartment with a gunshot wound to his face. He was taken to a hospital to be treated.
Molina said detectives are still trying to determine what led up to the shooting and if there are any other suspects involved. Investigators also are trying to determine the relationship between the resident and the two shooting victims.
He said police were not releasing the age or name of the man who was killed.
Detectives are continuing to gather evidence and speak with witnesses, he said. “Everybody heard gunshots out there,” he said.
