A motorist suspected of driving under the influence crashed his car into construction equipment parked along east state Route 78 in Carlsbad Sunday afternoon, leading to the death of his 25-year-old passenger, California Highway Patrol officials said.
The collision happened just after 4:10 p.m. near El Camino Real.
The 21-year-old driver was in a black Nissan Sentra when, for reasons still under investigation, he veered off the freeway and crashed into the equipment, CHP Officer Hunter Gerber said in a statement.
The man’s passenger suffered major injuries and died at a hospital. The driver, a Vista resident, was arrested on suspicion of several crimes, including felony driving under the influence and gross vehicular manslaughter.
Anyone with information about the crash was asked to call the CHP’s Oceanside office at (760) 643-3400.
