A 63-year-old man walking across an El Cajon street was fatally struck by a pickup in a hit-and-run crash Sunday evening, police said.
The pedestrian was hit by a 2005 Dodge Ram while walking across East Main Street outside of a crosswalk near East Madison Avenue around 5:15 p.m., El Cajon police Lt. Darrin Forster said.
The driver reportedly fled the scene before officers arrived, heading west, Forster said.
The pedestrian died before he could be taken to a hospital, investigators said. His name was not released pending notification of his family.
After speaking with witnesses and using the city’s license plate reader system, investigators found the license plate number and a photograph of the truck, police said.
The registered owner of the truck was contacted and helped officers find the 64-year-old man believed to have been driving the truck at the time of the crash, Forster said.
Forster said the driver told investigators where he parked the car after the crash and then turned himself in. He was booked into jail on suspicion of hit and run.
As of Monday, investigators do not believe alcohol or drugs were factors in the crash.
