A pedestrian was killed early Monday after being hit by several vehicles on northbound Interstate 805 in the Clairemont area, prompting an hours-long traffic jam.
All northbound lanes were closed just south of Clairemont Mesa Boulevard after the collision, which was reported shortly before 5:15 a.m.
The pedestrian was hit while walking out into the freeway lanes, said California Highway Patrol Officer Mark Latulippe.
The drivers who hit the person stopped and remained at the scene, he said.
The collision prompted a major traffic jam on the freeway as the morning commute was getting under way.
Just before 7:30 a.m., CHP officers were able to open up the far right lane — more than two hours after the crash. Drivers also were able to get north taking the collector road at the exit, which remained open, Latulippe said.
As of 8:15 a.m., traffic remained backed up all the way south into National City.
