A pedestrian was struck by an SUV and killed on Interstate 5 in Old Town on Saturday night, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The pedestrian was walking across the northbound lanes, north of Old Town Avenue, about 8:30 p.m. when a black Lexus SUV struck him, CHP Officer Salvador Castro said.
The pedestrian — whose age was not available — suffered “major injuries” and died at the scene, Castro said. The pedestrian’s name was not released, pending family notifications.
Two right lanes were closed for about an hour and a half during the on-scene investigation, the officer said.
It was unknown if the pedestrian was under the influence of drugs or alcohol, Castro said, adding that a toxicology report was pending.
The driver, a 58-year-old Vista man, was not under the influence of alcohol or drugs and cooperated in the investigation, Castro said.
The cause of the crash was under investigation. Anyone with information was asked to call the CHP at (858) 293-6000.
