A man who threatened to harm himself was detained at the Hotel del Coronado on Saturday night after police evacuated some guests and placed the resort on “modified lockdown,” Coronado police said.
Police got a call Saturday around 7:20 p.m. from a man who said he had a gun, was experiencing a mental health crisis and was suicidal. Officers weren’t able to determine his exact location before he hung up, Coronado police said in a post on the department’s Facebook page.
Dispatches tried to call him back several times. They were able to use mobile phone location data to determine he was near the main pool. Coronado police said they were assisted by the San Diego police helicopter and canine units.
After searching the area, officers located the man on a balcony overlooking the pool but he refused to cooperate with them, police said. After what was called “an extended effort” he was taken into custody and taken to a hospital to be evaluated.
No weapon was found. He was not a registered guest at the hotel.
Police said the man did not threaten to harm others. He also was not an active shooter, which the department said was misinformation circulated on social media.
