San Diego police are investigating a string of recent home burglaries in Mira Mesa — a series of break-ins that, given their similarities, appear to be linked.
There have been at least eight heists, police said in a news release. The thieves have mostly targeted homes on corner lots, slipping in through rear sliding glass doors. In several instances, they broke the glass door to gain entry. In one case, the door was unlocked.
Once inside, the burglars ransack the homes, carrying off cash, jewelry, even safes.
Police released doorbell video of one particularly brazen burglary. In the footage, a man with his face half-covered exits the front door of a home, then waves his arms and points to a spot along the curb. An SUV pulls up and stops there.
The man heads back inside the home. He soon reappears. as he and two other men exit through the front door carrying a large safe. They struggle to heft it off the porch and shove it across the lawn toward the waiting SUV.
They heave the bulky safe into the backseat, although the safe was so big they couldn’t quite get the door closed. The three men eventually scramble into the vehicle — one climbs over the safe — and the SUV drives off.
Investigators say the burglars appear to be men in their late teens or early 20s.
Police asked people to call them immediately if they see suspicious activity, Anyone with information about the burglary series was asked to email Lt. David Bautista at dbautista@pd.sandiego.gov or to call Crime Stoppers at (888) 580-8477.
