A driver trying to evade San Diego police early Monday crashed into a tree in San Ysidro and ended up hospitalized, officials said.
Officers initiated a traffic stop for some type of moving violation or equipment issue shortly after 6:30 a.m. at Camino de la Plaza and Virginia Avenue, but instead of pulling over the driver took off, said police Officer Sarah Foster.
The chase ended in a collision very quickly, she said. Foster said it was a solo-vehicle crash but she was unsure what the vehicle hit.
Fox 5 San Diego video aired early Monday showed the wrecked car next to a damaged tree.
The driver was trapped in the car but was able to exit the vehicle by himself. He was taken by ambulance to be treated for his injuries, police said.
No other details were immediately available.
