A sailor aboard the San Diego-based destroyer USS Halsey died on March 16 while on deployment in the Indian Ocean, according to the Navy’s 7th Fleet in Yokosuka, Japan.
“Gunner’s Mate 3rd Class Elijah Riddle … was found unresponsive in their berthing while underway,” the Navy said in a statement.
“Efforts to revive the Sailor were unsuccessful, and they were subsequently pronounced deceased. A Special Psychiatric Rapid Intervention Team (SPRINT) has been deployed to the ship and grief and counseling services are being provided to our Sailors.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the Sailor’s family, friends, and coworkers during this time. The circumstances of the death are currently under investigation.”
