DOWNTOWN SAN DIEGO —
The city of San Diego said Saturday it has completed the railroad safety improvements it was told to make by the Federal Railroad Association to earn reinstatement of a train Quiet Zone downtown, between Laurel Street and Fifth Avenue.
The FRA recently suspended the Quiet Zone designation after it discovered a variety of safety violations during an inspection.
Since then, trains have be required to sound their horns when they approach highway-rail grade crossings downtown, the FRA said. The loud noises irritate the public.
The FRA will now review the improvements and decide whether to approve them. It’s unclear how quickly that will be done.
