A 66-year-old inmate at George Bailey Detention Facility died while he was being treated at a hospital Tuesday.
The man had been extradited from El Salvador and booked into sheriff’s custody on Sept. 23 in connection with a 1991 murder in Emerald Hills, Lt. Michael Krugh said in a news release.
On Nov. 15, the man began to suffer from shortness of breath at the Otay Mesa jail and was taken to a hospital, where he was put in the ICU due to medical complications, Krugh said.
On Tuesday, investigators were told he had died at around 9:15 a.m., according to Krugh. His name was not released pending notification of his family.
The county Medical Examiner’s Office will determine the cause of death.
Krugh said a sheriff’s family liaison officer will support the family, and investigators will notify the consulate general of El Salvador about the man’s death.
The Sheriff’s Office said its homicide division is investigating the death, per policy. The Citizens’ Law Enforcement Review Board, the county’s civilian oversight body, will also review the case.
So far this year, six people have died in local jails and two additional inmates have died while being treated at hospitals.
