Two San Diego police officers driving in City Heights Thursday night witnessed a shooting that left a bicyclist dead, police said.
The officers were driving on El Cajon Boulevard near 49th Street about 7:45 p.m. when they saw someone fire a gun from the passenger side of an SUV, said homicide Lt. Jud Campbell. The officers then saw a person down in the street. The officers stopped to help the victim while also putting out a call for other officers to look for the dark-colored SUV, Campbell said.
Paramedics took the victim, suffering from at least one gunshot wound to the torso, to a hospital, where he died. He had not been identified as of Friday morning, police said.
Homicide investigators said it appeared the victim was riding a bicycle west on El Cajon Boulevard and that he had some kind of interaction, possibly an argument, with people in the SUV, which was driving the same direction, prior to the shooting.
Police had not located the SUV or made any arrests as of 6 a.m. Friday.
Anyone with information regarding this incident was asked to call the homicide unit at (619) 531-2293 or Crime Stoppers at (888) 580-8477.
