Two people inside a car that was fleeing from San Diego police officers were injured early Monday when the car rolled down an embankment near an Emerald Hills freeway exit, police said.
An officer pursuing the car also complained of pain to his neck and back after his police SUV crashed off the roadway, San Diego police Officer Sarah Foster said.
The pursuit began just after 1:15 a.m. in the Lincoln Park neighborhood when an officer tried to make a traffic stop on a white sedan that was speeding on South 47th Street south of Imperial Avenue, Foster said.
The driver did not stop, and police gave chase, eventually following the car onto eastbound state Route 94, Foster said. The driver of the fleeing car exited the freeway at Kelton Road, where it crashed and rolled into a shallow canyon.
FOX5 San Diego, citing information from San Diego police Lt. Paul Phillips, reported the car rolled several times before coming to rest on its roof. The station reported that two men of unknown age were inside the car.
Both people inside the car suffered serious leg injuries that included fractures, Foster said.
A patrol SUV also went into the canyon but stayed upright on its wheels. Foster said an officer in that vehicle was the one who complained of neck and back pain.
