Santa Ana winds will sweep into eastern San Diego County this weekend, extending what could turn out to be a long and worrisome dry spell for the region, the National Weather Service said.
San Diego International Airport has recorded 0.68 inches of precipitation since the rainy season began on Oct. 1. That’s roughly 1 inch below average.
Forecasters say it appears that the county will receive little significant rain through Dec. 22, and maybe longer, as the jet stream mostly remains up north, where torrential rain fell earlier this week in western Washington state.
This type of dry spell can greatly increase the risk of wildfires.
A wind advisory will be in effect for areas generally east of Interstate 15 from 10 a.m. Saturday to 3 p.m. Sunday. Winds will blow 20 mph to 30 mph, with gusts up to 50 mph, notably on Interstate 8 east of Alpine, a well-known wind corridor.
San Diego’s daytime high will reach 71 on Saturday, 75 on Sunday and 70 on Monday. The seasonal average is 67. Alpine will hit 64 on Saturday, 72 on Sunday and 67 on Monday.
