The popular tide pools at Cabrillo National Monument were closed after a sewage spill at the nearby Point Loma Wastewater Treatment Plant.
National Park Service officials posted the closure Wednesday on Instagram, warning people to avoid contact with the water. The coastal trail remains open.
The plant is located on the oceanside of Point Loma, about a half-mile north of the tide pools and less than a mile north of the tip of the peninsula.
According to the county’s Beach and Bay Water Quality Program, about 5,875 gallons spilled as of Tuesday.
The stretch of water a quarter-mile north of and south of the plant are also closed, and people are asked to avoid the area. A San Diego city spokesperson said Wednesday the cause of the spill remains under investigation.
The ocean water contains sewage and could lead to illness. The closure will remain in place until water sampling and observations in the field confirm the water is safe for contact.
