An investigation into dozens of mysterious explosions in Vista earlier this year led to the arrest of a 34-year-old man on Tuesday and the seizure of more than three pounds of cocaine, a firearm and a mortar tube used in setting off illegal fireworks, sheriff’s officials said.
Deputies served a search warrant at a home on North Citrus Avenue near Nevada Avenue around 5 a.m. One man was arrested on charges including suspicion of child cruelty, possession of drugs for sale, possession of drugs while armed and drug possession, said Sgt. Adam Milligan.
Nineteen people at the home were detained and questioned, he said.
The man who was arrested is being held in Vista jail on $500,000 bail, after a bail enhancement was granted, Milligan said. He is set to be arraigned Thursday.
In the fall, deputies began investigating reports of explosions and illegal fireworks being set off near North Citrus Avenue and in other locations in the city. The Vista sheriff’s station also received complaints about illegal activity taking place at the home, Milligan said.
Residents complained about hearing dozens of nerve-rattling explosions in Vista that tripped car alarms and spooked pets . Deputies increased patrols in the area and launched an investigation.
Data released by the Sheriff’s Department showed more than 30 reports of the sound of explosions between March and September.
Several sheriff’s units including the bomb/arson unit and the narcotics and gang team, as well as the city of Vista’s Code Enforcement Unit and county Child Protective Services, assisted with the arrest Tuesday, Milligan said.
