A TikToker has revealed two useful fruit storage hacks to ensure your apples stay crisp weeks after they’ve been purchased.
Though not all types of apples can be preserved for the same length of time, storing fruit correctly will control how much ethylene gas is released, and thereby delay rotting.
TikTok content creators at @Brightly.eco explained that picking the healthiest apples on offer is crucial, as the fruit must have stems to prevent early decay.
“Before buying look for stems, No stems means an easy entrance point for microorganisms and air, which will make the apple rot faster,” the content creator explained in the clip.
Additionally, storing the fruits inside a veggie saver bag helps keep the fruit crisp for weeks.
One of the benefits of keeping apples in the fridge is that cold temperatures slow the release of ethylene, which contributes to the ripening of the fruit.
“Store them in a fridge or even better, store them in your veggie saver bag, this will keep your apples crisp and delicious for weeks,” noted the TikTokers.
They added: “Avoid throwing a pile of apples in a large bowl, it may be visually appealing but it’s a sure way for them to rot quickly.”
@Brightly.eco claims that sliced apples can also stay crip if stored adequately, even if this typically causes fruit to brown in seconds.
“If you wanna have sliced apples that you want to keep fresh for longer, soak the slices in honey water in your stasher bag,” noted the TikTokers.
“The honey preservative powers will keep the slices from browning, or just toss them in the freezer.”
It should be noted that keeping apples apart from other fruits and vegetables will stop the ethylene from contributing to their decay.
Potatoes are an exception to this rule, as their shelf-life is typically prolonged when they’re stored alongside apples, contrary to other produce.
The key to storing all apples properly is, first and foremost, finding a cool and dark environment with the right amount of ventilation and humidity.
