Households can save over £700 a year on heating by carrying out several “simple actions”, such as bleeding radiators and insulating pipes, experts have said.
Eleanor Potter, head of strategic sourcing Plumbworld, who has compiled a list of tips, said: “As we step into 2024, it’s clear that smart home improvements are more than just good habits; they’re investments in your future comfort and current wallet.
“Simple actions like a quick radiator bleed or a small adjustment to your water heater temperature can make a noticeable difference. We know that every penny counts.”
She added: “Try out one or two changes to begin with, and you’ll likely see a difference.
“It’s all about making your home work better for you, without needing to be a DIY expert.”
Regular HVAC maintenance
According to some HVAC professionals, regular maintenance can improve efficiency by up to 15 percent. If the average annual heating bill is around £1,200, a 15 percent reduction can translate into a yearly £180 cost saving.
Insulate pipes
Insulating pipes can reduce heat loss, reducing the energy needed to heat water. According to Plumbworld experts, insulating pipes is estimated to reduce heating bills by three to four percent. Based on a £1,200 bill, this can save households up to £48 a year.
Boiler check and maintenance
Ms Potter said: “A well-maintained boiler can operate up to 15 percent more efficiently than a neglected one. If heating costs £1,200 annually, proper maintenance can yield significant savings.”
The 15 percent saving could translate into a bill reduction of up to £180.
Seal draughts
Draught-proofing can save around 10 percent on energy bills. For an average home with heating costs of around £1,200 per year, this could translate into a £120 annual bill reduction.
Clean gutters and drains
While this doesn’t directly save on heating bills, preventing structural damage and water infiltration can save on repair costs.
If the average repair cost from water damage is around £500, Ms Potter said preventing this even every few years could save around £100 per year.
Radiator bleeding
Bleeding radiators can increase efficiency by up to five percent. For an annual heating bill of around £1,200, a five percent reduction would save households around £60 a year.
Water heater temperature
For each 10C that the water heater temperature is lowered, Plumbworld experts said people can save up to five percent in energy costs. If the annual cost of a household’s hot water is around £400, a moderate temperature reduction could save £20 a year.
Implementing all of these energy-saving measures could save households around £708 per year on heating and water heating bills.
Ms Potter added: “Think of these steps as the start of a journey towards a more efficient home.
“As you see your bills decrease, you’ll feel the satisfaction of knowing you’re not just saving money but also creating a more comfortable living environment. So, take it one step at a time, and let’s make 2024 a year of smart, rewarding home improvements.”
