Six people were detained on suspicion of being in the country illegally after a suspected smuggling boat came to shore in Ocean Beach late Tuesday, officials said.
Border Patrol agents were tipped off around 11 p.m. that a boat had crossed the maritime boundary line that marks the border between Mexico and the U.S.
Agents monitored the vessel as it headed north along the coast until it made landfall near Santa Cruz Avenue, where six people got off the boat, according to Eric C. Lavergne, an agency spokesperson.
“All six subjects were determined to be adult Mexican nationals present in the United States without proper documentation,” he said. They were taken to a Border Patrol station for immigration processing. The boat was seized.
It was the second suspected smuggling boat coming into Ocean Beach on Tuesday.
Around 6:30 a.m., agents were called to Ocean Beach’s Dog Beach, where they found an 18-foot-long boat but no passengers.
Agents did find six personal flotation devices in the area. Customs and Border Protection agents seized the vessel.
