State pensioners across the UK are being urged to check for a letter from the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) to claim a £4,200 income boost.
The DWP is writing to around 11 million pensions over the coming weeks urging them to apply for Pension Credit.
The benefit provides extra money to help pension-age households in England, Wales and Scotland on a low income cover living costs, and tops up your weekly income to £218.15 if you’re single, or up to £332.95 if you have a partner.
The government says the benefit alone is worth £4,200 per year, but it also acts as a gateway to a vast array of other financial support. This includes Council Tax discounts, Housing Benefit, a free TV licence, a £150 discount on heating costs through the Warm Home Discount Scheme, and help with NHS treatment costs.
Pension Credit claimants are also entitled to a Winter Fuel Payment which is worth up to £300. Rule changes enforced by Labour in 2024 meant that millions of pensioners who used to receive the Winter Fuel Payment now miss out, as the benefit is now means-tested and only goes to those in receipt of Pension Credit, or any of the following:
The change was made to ensure the payment goes to households that need it most, but it means that pensioners who are only just above the affordability threshold now miss out.
The number of eligible households has now dropped from around 11 million to just over one million, but those who claim Pension Credit will still receive it so it’s well worth checking if you qualify for the benefit.
The DWP is sending letters to 11 million households urging them to check their eligibility and this will include an accompanying leaflet encouraging people to sign up.
Pensions Minister Torsten Bell said: “Over the coming weeks, as part of the annual State Pension uprating exercise, around 11 million pensioners will receive a leaflet promoting Pension Credit along with their State Pension uprating letter.”
The DWP says you can start an application up to four months before you reach State Pension age – which is 66 for both men and women – and any time after, but your application can only be backdated by three months.
You can apply online via GOV.UK or by calling the Pension Credit claim line on 0800 99 1234.
