The National Weather Service on Tuesday issued a tornado warning for a wide area of south and central San Diego County.
A severe thunderstorm was located over Paradise Hills and near Chula Vista around 11:44 a.m. The warning extended to a wide area including Chula Vista, El Cajon, National City, La Mesa, La Presa, Paradise Hills, Lincoln Park, Spring Valley, Lakeside and Crest.
By noon, the severe thunderstorm was located over El Cajon, and was moving northeast at 35 mph.
The NWS said the tornado could damage roofs, windows and vehicles, with tree damage likely. The warning will be in effect until 12:45 p.m.
“Move to a basement or an interior room on the lowest floor of a sturdy building. Avoid windows. If you are outdoors, in a mobile home, or in a vehicle, move to the closest substantial shelter and protect yourself from flying debris,” the warning said.
