A former trustee for the California State University system and a former U.S. attorney in Hawaii will be joining the Board of Trustees of the San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance in January.
Adam Day, an executive with the Sycuan Band of Kumeyaay Nation who served on the CSU board for nine years, and Kenji Price, who served as the top federal prosecutor in Hawaii for three years and is now managing counsel at Epic Games, have been appointed to the 12-member volunteer board.
Day and Price will be taking the place of two board members whose terms have ended — Linda Lowenstine and Rick Gulley, a zoo spokesperson said.
San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance is a nonprofit organization that operates the San Diego Zoo and San Diego Zoo Safari Park and promotes global wildlife conservation.
“We are delighted to welcome Adam and Kenji to our board,” Paul Baribault, president and CEO of the organization, said in a statement. “They bring a wealth of knowledge from multiple sectors and are proven civic leaders in their own right.”
Day is chief administrative officer for Sycuan. A San Diego State University graduate, Day was an aide for two county supervisors in the 1990s before moving into the private sector, working in public affairs. He served on the CSU board until 2022, resigning to avoid a potential conflict as Sycuan pursued a Major League Soccer franchise.
Day said he was looking for another way to be active in civic affairs after stepping down from the CSU post. Day’s late father, Thomas Day, served as president of San Diego State University for 18 years.
“I was approached by the zoo and realized I have always had a passion for animal welfare and wildlife conservation. I have been a visitor to the San Diego Zoo and Safari Park since I arrived in 1978 with my parents,” he said in an email.
“I am very excited to learn more and be an advocate for the San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance and the incredible work they do.”
Price grew up in Hawaii, graduated from Gonzaga University and earned his law degree at the University of Pennsylvania Law School. He worked as an assistant U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of New York and served as U.S. attorney in Hawaii until 2021, according to a Department of Justice news release. He was in the Army for four years, serving in the 75th Ranger Regiment and the 173rd Airborne Brigade. According to the zoo, he deployed overseas four times and was twice awarded the Bronze Star Medal.
Price is managing counsel at Epic Games, an interactive entertainment company and provider of 3D engine technology headquartered in North Carolina, where he handles regulatory work, according to the zoo. Before joining Epic Games, Price was a litigation partner at McDermott, Will & Emery LLP.
