After floods devastated parts of San Diego County this week, next week’s planned annual State of the County address is being postponed, and county officials are encouraging San Diegans instead to observe a “day of service” to help people affected.
“We need to do what we do best as San Diegans and that is come to come together to really help each other during a really difficult time for so many,” said San Diego County Board of Supervisors Chair Nora Vargas.
Vargas was set to deliver the yearly county update Wednesday but said her top priority was assisting victims of storm damage.
Many San Diego flood victims’ homes have been damaged or destroyed by this week’s powerful rain storm and flash flooding.
Vargas said her speech would be rescheduled in the coming weeks so that the county could still provide updates on its priorities for the upcoming year.
Each year, the chair of the Board of Supervisors hosts county and government officials as well as other community leaders at the invitation-only event, which was scheduled to take place at Vargas’ alma mater, Southwestern College, in Chula Vista this year.
The event will also be broadcast live online via the county’s news center.
