Authorities arrested a woman early Sunday who they believe started a fire that destroyed 14 garages at an East County apartment complex last week.
The fire happened just before 9:30 p.m. Thursday in a complex on East Bradley Avenue, east of state Route 67 in an unincorporated area near El Cajon. Sheriff’s officials suspected the fire was started by a 43-year-old woman who was living in one of the garages with other homeless people.
The department received a phone call around 1:30 a.m. Sunday tipping them off to the woman’s whereabouts, officials said. A deputy found her on East Bradley Avenue, a few blocks from the apartment complex, and took her into custody without incident.
She was booked into Las Colinas Detention and Reentry Facility on charges of recklessly causing a fire, officials said. She was being held in lieu of $50,000 bail, according to jail records.
