A 52-year-old driver was killed and her passenger was seriously injured when her SUV went down an embankment in East County Tuesday afternoon, authorities said.
The solo-vehicle crash was reported around 4:35 p.m. on westbound Interstate 8 east of McCain Valley Road, near Boulevard, said California Highway Patrol Officer Jared Grieshaber.
The crash occurred when the driver veered right and her Ford Edge went off the road and rolled multiple times, Grieshaber said. Investigators believe drugs or alcohol were a factor in the crash, he said.
The passenger, a 43-year-old man, was transported by air ambulance to a hospital with major injuries. The driver and the passenger were both from Wilmington in Los Angeles County.
The identity of the woman who died has not been released.
